A great magician is a “master of imagination”, and Jonathan Pendragon referred to as a “maestro” by his peers is one of the greatest magicians the world has ever known. David Copperfield stated on stage, “when the history of magic is written, Jonathan Pendragon will be remembered as one of it’s most creative performers.” on viewing the performance of Jonathan Pendragon, Siegfried of Siegried and Roy simply said “Genius.” Gary Pudney, who produced magic specials for NBC, ABC, and CBS, drew used Jonathan’s expertise in front of the camera and behind the camera. In fact , NBC executive John Miller noted,” If anyone can bring something original to magic it’s Jonathan Pendragon.” Jonathan met this challenge, collaborating with Cincinnati Pops conductor Erich Kunzel. Together they designed and performed a show of illusion and music, for a PBS television special. For Oscar winning film director Norm Jewison, Jonathan staged a spectacular levitation to open the film “Bogus.” The most elaborate, and largest “magic special” to be produced starred “The Pendragons.” This two hour, world wide T.V. special, produced by “Disney,” featured several new illusions new to magic. Performed and created by Jonathan and Charlotte, inspired magicians including “Siegfried and Roy.”

Jonathan was chosen by Magic Magazine, as one of 10 living magicians whose work shaped magic in the 20th and 21st centuries. The honor and award Jonathan cherishes most is the one he received from Washington D.C.’s Lab School. Every year three American’s are honored by the school for overcoming the hardships of dyslexia,ADD, sever speech impediments and other learning disabilities. Those so honored make up a who’s who of film stars , sports legends, scientists, statesmen, and soldiers. Tom Cruise, Cher and Magic Johnson are among the recipients. Jonathan received the award for battling severe childhood speech impediments to be come known as a magician known for articulate “narratives of mystery.”

Hello everyone. I like to think that when I say everyone with reference to the club I am addressing all of the members from the top to the bottom. Now top to the bottom may sound negative to some but I look at it like this and not in any particular order. Youngest to Oldest, Aggressive to Passive, Novice to Expert, Close-Up to Stage, Theatre to Street, Ruff to Smooth, Loud to Quiet, Fat to Thin, you get my drift. We are a club that tries to be ONE SIZE FITS ALL. Now I can tell you being a 52 regular/3XL , ONE SIZE FITS MOST and so does our club. I hope some of my ramblings will make for good discussion and enlightenment. Personally I learn something or reinforce my own thoughts every time I see someone perform, and not just magic but any type of variety entertainment. I don’t want to turn this into a personal story of my magical career, but I think I have experienced every level of showbiz, being a performer from the beginning amateur to a long career of being a working professional entertainer. Be sure to check out the “ASK THE PROS” this will touch on some of the facets of performing that are more inportant than the mechanics of a trick. Its easy for me to admit that I am no finger flinging move monkey, but I do know something about entertaining. Learning a few tricks and being a performer is a long way from being an entertainer and I and a lot of our more experienced members are willing to help you be an entertainer. Remember in the real world, performers are easy to come by and entertainers are in great demand. Just ask questions and be willing to at least consider following their advice.

Til next time, Your Prez Rod

The “ASK THE PROS” question for this month is, What is the proper etiquette for visiting or watching another magician?

The consensus is that no matter if you are invited as a guest or just coming as a regular JOE leave your business cards, thumb tips, coins, cards and silks at home. There is only room for one magician and it ain’t you. But what if someone recognizes you as a magician and says hey show me something then what do you do. Well only to often the visitor mistakes this as an invitation to whip out his latest miracle, show a little restraint and decline. It just spells hack with all capitals to try and one-up each other, and then there’s this argument, but I can do a better job and cheaper too. Magicians are notorious for trying to insert themselves into a gig that they have no claim to. There is a reason why you paid for a ticket, you didn’t get the job. Use a visit to see the current Worlds Greatest Magician to learn not to copy. If its a sub-par exhibition of disillusions of grandure, be a gracious guest and be supportive, don’t volunteer or HELP OUT unless asked, try to blend in and have a good time.

It may appear that I am jumping the gun on becoming President for your Ring 129 by writing this column before the Magician Of The Year Contest and Banquet and the instalation of the new officers and board. If you are reading this you have already figured out that the new improved website for our Ring has been launched and is up and running. I as the incoming President will be writing a regular column no less than once a month.

I plan to enjoy this effort and I hope that it will be fun at times, informative when needed and maybe some surprises along the way.

I will also be hosting a question and answer column titled “ASK THE PROS”. I have fellow magicians ask me questions from time to time and instead of just commenting individually it would be even better to include everyone in the club. So heres your chance to email me at rod@eatfire.com with your question and I will get the answer from a qualified professional who will have answers to all of your questions. No question will go unanswered. I realize it may be painful to some but it should be interesting and entertaining to all.

January is a big month for the club with the Magician of The Year Contest and Banquet. Great entertainment, Great food and Great fun.
